Welcome to Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs

The Office provides strategic advice to the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT. The Office coordinates a whole-of-government approach to issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents and provides secretariat and administrative support to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body and the United Ngunnawal Elders Council. The Office also administers the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship Program.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body was established so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT have a strong democratically elected voice. It consists of seven people who are elected to represent the interests and aspirations of the local Indigenous community.

It was established under the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body Act 2008.

It provides direct advice to the ACT Government with the aim of improving the lives of Indigenous Canberrans, a step towards true reconciliation.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body Election

 The election for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body under the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body Act commenced on 11 April 2011 and concluded on 18 May 2011.

A total of 15 Nominations were received.

Following the polling from 2 to 7 May 2011, the poll was declared at 2 pm on Wednesday 18 May 2011 by the Electoral Commissioner at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre, Yarramundi Reach, Yarralumla.

Candidates were elected in the order as follows:

  • William Hodges
  • Dianne Collins
  • Brendan Church
  • Rod Little
  • John Paul Janke
  • Roslyn Brown

ACT Government Response to the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body Report

On 19 August 2009, the Elected Body conducted a hearings process.  The hearings were conducted in a manner similar to budget estimates hearings.  Chief Executives were called to present evidence supporting their agency’s spending and decision-making.

The Elected Body’s Estimates Report was tabled in the Legislative Assembly on 25 February 2010.

Subsequent to tabling, ACT Government agencies have responded to the 29 recommendations published in the Estimates Report of which 6 were identified as key recommendations.

The ACT Government Response to the Elected Body Report was tabled in the Legislative Assembly on 19 August 2010.
