About Schools as Communities

Schools as Communities is a voluntary and free program for children and families in selected ACT preschools and primary schools. It is funded by the Department of Disability, Housing and Community Services (DHCS).

The aim of the program is to work with schools, families, community services and businesses to enhance social, emotional and developmental outcomes for children and young people. This might be done through development projects, activities or events in the local area.

Schools as Communities focuses on early intervention and working collaboratively. It is now known that early intervention plays an important role in building resilient children and healthy families and, in turn, this helps to build strong communities.

Schools as Communities is part of the commitment to ensure that all children in the ACT have the best possible start in life.

Schools as Communities Workers

Schools as Communities workers are located in selected ACT preschools and primary schools. Their role is to identify and develop links and partnerships between home, school, local services and businesses. Workers can help families find and access information, supports and services within the local area.

Families can directly contact the workers to find out what Schools as Communities can offer, or to talk about ideas that could be developed to support the aims of the program.

Schools as Communities workers can assist families in the following ways:

  • Providing drop-in parenting information sessions.
  • Talking to a professional about parenting hurdles.
  • Linking families to specialist support services.
  • Connecting parents and families for informal sharing of information or support.
  • Having a chat about children’s behaviours and finding ways for parents to manage issues more effectively.
  • Hearing your ideas about projects that could be developed with local businesses or community organisations that can help to create healthy communities.
