The CCTV safety system was first installed in the civic area in 2001. Following recent advancements in technology, the ACT Government made the decision to refurbish the CCTV system. The high-resolution pan/tilt/zoom cameras cover Garema Place, the ACTION bus interchange including the Nightlink Taxi rank and many of Civics nightspots. The camera system is recorded and can be monitored from the City Police Station and allow police to observe the area in the event of an incident.
Although it may not deter crime, the CCTV cameras can act as a deterrent to anti-social behaviour and will be an important tool to fight crime in our city’s major entertainment area.
The ACT CCTV Project will involve the expansion of the current Civic CCTV system by up to 15 cameras.
