Most Canberrans can afford the cost of their housing, but some have problems. While housing affordability has improved significantly, affordable housing polices will continue to be essential.
Public housing will remain a significant source of affordable housing in Canberra. However, shortages of capital funds and the need to channel limited resources into purpose-built housing for people with special needs and into the the maintenance of deteriorating stock means that public housing will decrease as a portion of total stock.
In future, the private and community sectors will grow in importance as suppliers of low cost housing. These sectors need to be positioned for this growth in demand.
