ACT Multicultural Community Languages Grants Program

The 2010 round of Multicultural Language Grants 2009-10 are now open. Application forms are due 23 April 2010.

Introduction

The ACT Government recognises that having the ability to speak more than one language is an asset to the ACT community. Languages provide opportunity for the maintenance of cultural understanding and identity. The social and economic opportunities for individuals who speak more than one language are also broadened.

Statistics from the ABS 2006 census indicated that there were approximately 170 languages spoken in the ACT region. Community language schools play a vital role in assisting multicultural community groups to maintain their cultural identity, language and heritage.

In 2009-2010, Language Grants totalling $60,000 are available to complement programs and resources that Canberra’s multicultural community already devote to the learning of languages through community language schools and community organisations.

Objectives of the Program

The objective of the ACT Community Languages Grant is to assist community organisations with projects which facilitate speaking languages other than English.

Grant Funding Guidelines

ACT based Community Language Schools, new and emerging schools, and ACT Community Organisations are encouraged to apply for ACT Language grants.

  • Grants may be used for purposes relating to the operation of an ACT based community language school.
  • Funds must not be used for any purpose which creates a liability for future years.
  • Acquittal of the grant is required within 12 months after the announcement of recipients. No further grants will be awarded until the 2008 - 2009 grant is acquitted.
  • Recipient schools must not assume that receiving a grant this year means receiving grant in later years.

What will be funded

The ACT Language Grants can be used by not for profit incorporated community groups to help pay:

  • establishment costs - to assist new and emerging organisations and schools;
  • operating costs rent, materials;
  • equipment costs; or
  • professional development to enhance the provision of language training to students.
