About Bimberi
Bimberi Youth Justice Centre will provides a state of the art youth detention facility which is the first in Australia to comply with the Human Rights requirements, as well as being designed to meet Human Rights standards. It will accommodate children and young people (10 to 18 years old) who have been refused bail or are sentenced to a period of detention by the Children’s Court or Supreme Court of the ACT. Bimberi will operate within new legislative requirements of the Children’s and Young People’s Bill.
Bimberi staff will work closely with other parts of the Youth Directorate, Office for Children, Youth and Family Support, Community Services Directorate including Community Youth Justice and the Youth Policy and Programs Section. The Youth Directorate is focused on ensuring evidenced based, researched, developmentally appropriate, human rights compliant and child centred interventions with children, young people and their families.
Community Services Directorate
The Community Services Directorate has responsibility for a wide range of human services functions in the ACT, including multicultural affairs, community services, older people, women, public and community housing services and policy, children, youth and family support services and policy, disability policy and services, therapy services, Child and Family Centres, the ACT Government Concessions Program, homelessness, community engagement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, and community disaster recovery.

Office for Children, Youth and Family Support
The Office for Children, Youth and Family Support (OCYFS) is an administrative unit of the Community Services Directorate.
The Office works in partnership with the community to provide care and protection services to children and young people, and family and community support to meet the needs of the people of Canberra. In addition, the Office is responsible for youth justice services and the monitoring and licensing of children's services.
The Office aims to provide both universal and targeted programs and services at the prevention, early intervention and tertiary levels in a range of settings that support children, young people and families to reach their potential and that contributes to building community capacity. The Office is also committed to the involvement of children and young people in a meaningful way in decision making about their lives.

The Youth Directorate
The Youth Directorate has a number of programs to help young people re-engage with the community. These include:
- The Community Youth Justice Unit (CYJU) which provides supervision and case management for young people on community based orders. CYJ workers work with young people targeting criminogenic risk (the factors in a young person’s life that lead to offending behaviours) and ensuring that appropriate community supports are in place.
- The Turnaround program, Adolescent Day Unit and Youth Connections, who work closely with young people to assist with the transition and reintegration into education, training and work.
- The Youth Support Program which funds a number of community programs that provide support, guidance and mentoring for young people.
- Bimberi Youth Justice Centre.
