Principles that underpin Care and Protection practice are:
- The purpose and conduct of all interactions with families and other services will be child centred.
- Care and Protection Services will maximise opportunities for participation by children and their families in case management processes.
- The child and family will be given sufficient information about decision-making processes in language they can understand.
- If the child can form and express a view about their wellbeing, that view will be sought and considered, taking into account their age and maturity.
- Models of family decision making should be used wherever possible.
- Knowledge and expertise should be shared between professionals who know the child and family, at each stage of assessment and planning.
- All engagement with families will take place in a respectful manner that considers relevant aspects of cultural, spiritual, physical, linguistic, religious and sexual diversity.
- Children and their families will be provided with information about care and protection processes including legal and grievance processes.
- The Directorate will take an inclusive and strengths based approach to working with families.
- Care and Protection Services staff will form collaborative relationships with families and other services (including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services) in order to provide effective case management for children.
