Schools as Communities
The Schools as Communities program is part of the ACT Government’s commitment to building social capital. In recognition that a community with high social capital supports and includes its disadvantaged members, the focus of the program is on improving social and educational outcomes for at risk children and young people by creating strong and effective working relationships between families, communities and their schools.
The wellbeing of children and young people is strongly associated with the levels of social capital that exist in their families and their communities. Theory tells us that the growth of social capital in communities is achieved most effectively, when there is a strong coalition across different sectors: government, communities and business.
The Schools as Communities program builds on the unique opportunities provided in Canberra to develop a collaborative approach to both service delivery and the creation of social capital.
A defining feature of Canberra’s social capital is the quality, quantity and diversity of community groups in local neighbourhoods. Schools and preschools are the hub of local neighbourhoods and as such are well placed to support a range of services to assist individuals and families to participate in community life.
The school and preschool are therefore uniquely positioned to enhance outcomes for children and young people, particularly those at risk, by linking families with each other and with services and support structures to improve the quality of their lives.
