Revitalising Our Communities

In May 2008 the ACT Government announced a consultation process to help determine the future use of eight surplus schools and their environs.

After eight community forums, information stalls, site information brochures, stakeholder forums and submissions by email, phone and in person, that consultation is complete.

The government welcomed the broad range of views expressed by a significant crosssection of the community, and the feedback has helped to shape its final decisions. Four Regional Community Centres will now be established, along with the neighbourhood halls and community parks. The opportunities for childcare facilities will be investigated for three of the sites. In addition, reflecting the community’s feedback that they valued the landscape setting and the community space provided by the school sites, landscape plans will now be developed for each site.

Where to now

Now that the decisions have been made on the future use of the former school buildings and their environs, and community service organisations have been selected to occupy the Regional Community Centres — work will commence to deliver these projects. Already the buildings have been surveyed and scoped and a project manager is being engaged. Design and documentation will be carried out prior to Christmas 2008 and some internal refurbishment work will commence. Development Applications will be lodged for external works and new buildings. The landscape master plans and other planning studies will be initiated. Early next year building works will be underway with facilities being progressively completed through late 2009 and early 2010.

Local residents and members of the community will be advised of the detailed timetable for each site. Community councils, residents associations and local community groups will be consulted on community access and use of the neighbourhood halls.
