Therapy ACT is a program area of the Community Services Directorate. It provides a range of multidisciplinary therapy and support services for people with delays in development and developmental disabilities aged from birth to age 65.

Therapy and support services are available for physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology, social work and psychology.  There is no charge for this service.

Therapy ACT is an ACT Government therapy service for ACT residents that offers:

  • Therapy and intervention programs
  • Assessment Services
  • Counselling and support for families
  • Autism Service including autism assessments
  • Equipment Loan Service for children and young people
  • Information and advice for individuals, families, carers and teachers regarding development and disability concerns
  • Consultancy services for other professionals, carers and agencies

ACT residents including:

    • are at risk of or have delays in their development (birth to eight years of age)
    • have a development disability
    • have a disability
    • adults and adolescents with a developmental disability from childhood, including students attending special schools
    • families and carers of these children, adults and adolescents

1. Client and Family Focused Services
Therapy ACT:-

  • Considers each person holistically in the context of their lives.
  • Works in partnership with families/ caregivers, as well as other significant people in the person’s life.
  • Supports clients and their families/ caregivers to identify their concerns and priorities, to recognise their strengths, and to make informed decisions.
  • Is flexible and responsive to the client’s and family/ caregiver’s concerns and priorities.
  • Is responsive to changes in life stages, family changes, and transitions in education and employment.

2. Valuing and Respecting the rights and needs of clients
Therapy ACT:-

  • Aims to support individuals to achieve their maximum potential as members of the community.
  • Values diversity and respects the cultures of all people accessing the service.
  • Provides services on a needs basis.  Clients with higher priority needs are given priority.
  • Provides additional support to access services to vulnerable people.
  • Practices in accordance with ethical values, which support the principles of empowerment, self-determination, autonomy and dignity.

Therapy ACT:-

  • Works collaboratively with other agencies to enhance outcomes for clients.
  • Demonstrates mutual respect for the capacity and capabilities of other agencies and recognises their limitations.

Therapy ACT:-

Service Locations

Therapy ACT service centres are located in Belconnen (Swanson Plaza) and Holder (Cnr Weingarth St & Blackwood Terrace).  Services may also provided in client homes, schools and other community locations.

How to Contact Therapy ACT

Referral Intake Service.  Anyone can refer a person to Therapy ACT but it must be with the knowledge and consent of the parents/guardians of the person.  Individuals can also refer themselves.

For referrals or inquiries about Therapy ACT, call the Intake Service on 6205 1246.

This service is available from 9:00am - 3:30pm Monday to Friday.

If you have a complaint about any Therapy ACT service, prompt and constructive action will be taken. Complaints are investigated and handled in a confidential and impartial way.
