Therapy ACT Multi-Disciplinary Services

What are Multi-Disciplinary Services?

Multi-disciplinary (MD) service describes an approach to providing intervention across a range of therapy areas. Services are MD when two or more of the disciplines described in this booklet are involved. Sometimes this may mean that the therapists work simultaneously with you. At other times, one therapist may address multiple goals on behalf of themselves and the other therapists involved. This is sometimes called “trans-disciplinary”. At other times, you may have multiple therapists working with you on quite different areas, and therefore they may work quite independently of each other.

Whichever way you receive services, they will be based on your needs and tailored to you individually.

Service Delivery Models at Therapy ACT

Therapy ACT works in collaboration with clients, their families, and other key people in the client’s life. The focus of intervention is to assist the client to develop skills to enable them to maximise their participation in their community. To ensure transfer and generalisation of skills to all environments, therapy services often take the form of assessment and advice about intervention strategies. This may include skill development, provision of equipment or aids or other adaptive strategies.

Services can be provided to clients in a variety of settings, utilising the following service delivery options:

  • Individual intervention
  • Group programs
  • Partnerships with carers, teachers and significant others to develop and implement programs in the person’s natural environment allowing for generalisation of skills and practice opportunities
  • Assessment, trial and recommendation of equipment and environmental modifications
  • Provision of information documents such as reports, funding applications
  • Education and support for caregivers
  • Liaison and collaboration with relevant government and non-government agencies to provide coordinated approach to client care
