Speech Pathology Afternoon Workshops

Language and Speech Planning Matrix

This workshop introduces the Language and Speech Planning Matrix, a planning tool for teachers to use with students who have language and/ or speech difficulties. Participants will learn about the Matrix and its benefits as a planning tool, as well as participating in practical activities designed to practise using the Matrix. Participants are encouraged to come along to the workshops with (de-identified) student examples from their teaching practice, to use in the practical activities. This workshop is particularly suitable for primary and secondary mainstream teachers.

Therapy ACT Autism Service

Essential Skills in Autism for Early Childhood Teachers

This course will be presented by professionals from the Therapy ACT Autism Team and Educational Staff.

The four workshops that comprise this course are designed for Early Childhood teachers working with children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Participants will be provided with practical and evidenced based strategies to encourage play, develop positive behaviours, provide sensory support and increase communication for children with an ASD.

This is a 4 part course and participants are required to commit to attending all four sessions.

Participants are also required to complete module 1 on the online learning portal for Positive Partnerships www.autismtraining.com.au, prior to the first workshop.

Half Day Workshop

Learn to Move, Move to Learn

Do you know students who-

  • slump over the desk, lean against people or furniture, slouch on the chair or perch on an edge of the seat?
  • fidget and move much of the time?
  • seem clumsy, have trouble with ball skills or try to avoid gross motor activities?
  • are disorganised and/or can’t remember routines?
  • have difficulty with handwriting, using scissors or self care skills?
  • become disengaged, frustrated or refusing to complete tasks?

The Learn To Move/ Move to Learn Workshop will provide information about gross and fine motor skill development, motor development issues that impact learning in the school environment and ideas to address these areas.

The workshop will include demonstration of activities, practical application of information, checklists for expected development and when to refer to other professionals as well as resource information.

Full Day Workshop

Sensational Learning - The Impact of Sensory Processing on Learning & Behaviour

Sensory processing may explain why some students have difficulties with motor coordination are sensitive to e.g. noise, lights or are unable to focus their attention. This may lead to challenging behaviours.

This workshop aims to provide participants with a framework for understanding how sensory processing impacts on learning & behaviour.

You will be presented with practical ideas that can improve attention/ alertness, calm & assist students who are over responsive & have challenging behaviours.

Activities will be demonstrated with practical applications for the classroom. You will also be presented with information about resources relevant for the classroom.

Write On

Do any students in your class have:

  • Difficulty forming letters?
  • Illegible writing?
  • Writing not formed on the line?
  • Writing too large?
  • Pain when writing?

The “Write On” Handwriting Program is a researched, evidence based handwriting program designed to provide proven writing skills strategies.
“Write On” will provide classroom staff with the skills and resources to:

  • identify the handwriting needs of their students
  • provide a developmental structure of activities to scaffold the skills required for the complex skill of handwriting.
  • learn practical strategies that can be easily incorporated into the curriculum to assist children to develop handwriting skills
  • enhance the handwriting skill development of children.
  • explore fine motor development and the skills and subcomponents required for handwriting,
  • implement practical classroom application and activities that will assist with improving handwriting.

“Write On” is an interactive and dynamic full day event held each term and a manual with sample program is supplied (teachers to bring samples of student work). Workshops are open to all education sectors. This workshop will attract a fee of $45.00pp ($24 for course handouts and $21.00 HBCTL fee). School teams (Teachers and Learning Support Assistants) are encouraged to attend.
