ACT Volunteer Statement
“Volunteering thrives in the ACT”
The ACT Volunteering Statement sets out four concise, high-level principles which recognise the benefits, opportunities and requirements associated with volunteering and represents a central point of reference for volunteering in the ACT.
Volunteering is an enriching experience for those involved and the ACT Volunteering Statement provides a platform for good practice and a whole-of-government and whole-of-community approach to supporting and recognising volunteers.

Development of the ACT Volunteering Statement
Community consultation on the development of the ACT Volunteer Statement was guided by an information paper, and survey which sort the views of volunteers and volunteer involving organisations. The key messages we heard through community consultation were to look at the following areas:
- The importance of recognising the contribution of volunteers and volunteering;
- The importance of diverse opportunities and recruitment practices;
- Effective and targeted linking processes;
- Flexible work-leave options for workers wishing to volunteer;
- Capacity development for volunteer-involving organisations in volunteer recruitment, activity planning, organising supervising; and
- Recognition and reimbursement for costs incurred – especially travel.
The four principles of the ACT Volunteering Statement were developed from these messages we heard through consultation.
