International Women’s Day 2009

Recognised by the United Nations in 1975, International Women's Day (IWD) is held each year on March 8 around the globe. IWD provides an opportunity to celebrate the incredible diversity and creativity of women and to highlight the contribution they make within our community. It also provides an opportunity to celebrate the gains women have made over the years and to focus on the issues that women still face.

IWD Calendar of Events Booklet

Each year an IWD Calendar of Events booklet is produced by the Women’s Information and Referral Centre and the ACT Office for Women. You can download the booklet or contact the ACT Office for Women on 02 6205 0515 to order copies. The art work featured in the 2009 IWD Calendar of Events is ‘Turtle Dreaming’ by Belinda McDowell, a young Wiradjuri/Yorta Yorta women from Cowra in the Central West of NSW. Belinda won the Inaugural Foundation for Youth Indigenous Art Award at the ACT Legislative Assembly in 2007, and is represented in the collection of national Museum of Australia, the Canberra institute of Technology, and numerous provide collections.

UNIFEM Australia has chosen the theme 'Unite to End Violence Against Women'

In Canberra, the 2009 International Women's Day theme is “Celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women” linking with the International Year of Reconciliation.

The YWCA is running a one day workshop for community workers on the United Nations (UN), Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women and Children (CEDAW).The workshop aims to strengthen understanding of the UN CEDAW; provide an update on government policy agendas for women’s human rights and add your issues into the Non Government Organisations Report to the UN on Australia’s implementation of CEDAW.

Bureaucrats and Bleeding Hearts: Indigenous Health in Northern Australia - Forum

Associate Professor Tess Lea is a Darwin born academic and anthropologist with a long standing interest in the ways in which social service bureaucracies help and also hinder the people they are meant to serve. Her book “Bureaucrats and Bleeding Hearts” is a close examination of the culture of public health professionals in Territory Health Services. This forum is organised by the Community and Public Sector Union (CPSU) and is for members only.

The Accidental Feminist – When Lived Experience Collides with the Myth of a Post-Feminist World
Many of us born after the successes of the 1970s women’s liberation movement were raised to think of ourselves as ‘people not genders’. We grew up believing that being female would not affect our opportunities or choices.

Emily Maguire is the author of The Gospel According to Luke, Taming the Beast, Princesses and Porn Stars: Sex, Power and Identity. Her articles and essays on sex, religion, culture and literature have been widely published including in the Sydney Morning Herald, The Griffith Review, The Observer and the Age. Refreshments will follow the lecture.

MC: Virginia Hausegger, Canberra ABC News presenter.
Fozilitun Nessa – Acid attack victim and board member, Bangladeshi Acid Survivors’ Foundation. In 2007 over 187 people suffered acid attacks, the majority of whom were women, often under the age of 18. Fozilitun is determined to bring these women out of the shadows and help give them hope for the future. All funds raised by the lunch will go towards this project.
