A project which will support women with disabilities to access mainstream services and the development of education resources to better equip girls and boys with the skills to develop and maintain safe and respectful relationships are among the 13 projects sharing funding of $100,000 from the 2010-12 ACT Women's Grants Program.
ACT Minister for Women, Joy Burch today announced the 13 successful applicants at the ACT Women’s Services Network Breakfast which was held to celebrate International Women’s Day.
The Women’s Grants Program provides funding to projects that contribute to improving outcomes for women and girls in areas of leadership, economic independence, community participation, the arts health and sports.
"Improving the status of women and girls is fundamental to the ACT Government's vision of a strong, inclusive and safe community," Ms Burch said. "There was a strong field of diverse projects that were proposed this year, and I am pleased to see some very innovative and important programs and projects receive funding in 2010-12."
The 13 recipients included Nican - inclusive recreation for Australians of all abilities, a not-for-profit organisation which has developed an award winning education tool “Know Before You Go” which will develop the capacity of ACT services to include women with disabilities. It will equip a range of women and organisations to spread disability confidence in areas like sport, recreation, volunteering and health and fitness.
Other recipients included the Women's Legal Centre, Companion House, Basketball ACT, Mental Health Foundation (ACT), YWCA of Canberra, Women’s Centre for Health Matters, Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services and ACT Women and Prisons Group, No Sweat Fashions Limited, Toora Women, and the Atfal Family Playgroup.
