ACT Government Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services

(ACT) Office of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Affairs  - provides strategic advice to the Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs on issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT. 

ACT Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Education Consultative Group - advises the ACT Government with independent advice on education and training for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people.  

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services (ATSIS) unit External Link  - provides culturally appropriate services to the ACT's Indigenous communities including an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Kinship and Foster Care Service, an Indigenous Family Support Program and a supported accommodation facility for young Indigenous males at-risk. 

Indigenous Sport Program External Link - works in partnership with sporting organisations to ensure that sporting programs are developed to suit the needs of Indigenous people and families in ACT and surrounding areas. 

ACT Department of Education External Link  - Indigenous Policy and Organisational Practice section - supports ACT public schools to implement the strategic directions of the plan and in particular coordinates the provision of the Indigenous Education Officers program.

Parentlink External Link  - provides culturally appropriate parenting guides for Indigenous families.

Aboriginal Corporation for Sport and Recreation Activities (Boomanulla Oval) External Link  - promotes sporting programs for Aboriginal and Torres people and wider community. Phone: 02 6295 8557

Aboriginal Hostels LTD External Link  - provides short term accommodation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders needing support. Note: it appears that there are currently no hostels in the ACT.

Aboriginal Justice Centre Inc External Link  - provides support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT criminal justice system.

Jabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre External Link  - provides support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people studying at tertiary level at the Australian National University.

Journey of Healing ACT External Link  - promotes understanding and healing between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.  Arranges events for Sorry Day each year and supports local Aboriginal initiatives.

Munjuwa Aboriginal Corporation - a community service and housing cooperative for Indigenous people. Doctor, midwife, diabetic health nurse and sexual health nurse services operates Wednesdays 9am to 12pm.

Ngunnawal Aboriginal Land Council - deals with land claims, undertakes consultancies for archaeological sites and sites of significance.

Ngunnawal Community Care - specialises in brokering home and community care services for Indigenous people in Queanbeyan, Yass, Bungendore and Braidwood.  Clients must be disabled and aged 45 years and over.

Ngunnawal Indigenous Higher Education Centre External Link  - has been functioning since 1995 as the focal point for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders studying at the University of Canberra.

United Ngunnawal Elders Council  - advises the ACT Chief Minister on issues, policies and programs related to the needs of the Ngunnawal people. 

Urayarra Indigenous Youth Skills and Education Program External Link  - provides an education accredited program to year 10 for Indigenous youth. 

Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Services External Link  - provide a culturally safe holistic health service for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of the ACT and surrounding areas. 

Yurauna Centre External Link  - provides support, advice and information on courses within CIT to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

ABC Indigenous External Link  - online portal for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The Indigenous portal has replaced the Message Stick gateway. The portal was developed in consultation with the ABC Indigenous Programs Unit and with members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community from around Australia. 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Library Information And Resource Network Inc. External Link  - support and information network for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people working in libraries and for those people servicing the information needs of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples. 

Australian Government Programs and Services for Indigenous people External Link  - A Directory providing links to the most significant Australian Government programs for Indigenous people.

Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) External Link  - aims to strengthen the economic, social and cultural development of the Torres Strait to improve the lifestyle and wellbeing of Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people living in the region.

Information and resources on culture and languages

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages External Link  - this site has annotated links to 231 resources for about 80 languages.  About 35% of these resources are produced or published by Indigenous people. 

National Aboriginal Islander Day Observance CommitteeExternal Link NAIDOC - celebrates the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia. All Australians are encouraged to participate in NAIDOC Week activities. 

The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) External Link  - undertakes and encourages scholarly, ethical community-based research, holds a priceless collection of films, photographs, video and audio recordings and the world's largest collections of printed and other resource materials for Indigenous Studies, and has its own publishing house.

Other useful websites

The Black Book External Link  - has two main sections: the Black Book Directory and Black Book Library.  The Directory includes more than 2,700 listings of Indigenous organisations and individuals working across 95 professions in the arts, media and cultural industries. Each listing provides contact information as well as a history of individual professional experience and organisational profiles. The Library is constantly evolving to include new artistic works by Indigenous people. It currently contains 2,000 works from the late 1890s until now.
